Message to Students - March 26, 2020
Hi everybody! Hope everyone is doing well. I understand these are trying times and we are all in unfamiliar territory. Even though I have not seen you all in quite some time, please know that I have not stopped being invested in your educational journey! I'm proud of all the great things we are hearing about our awesome Chargers and I commend you for tackling this new adventure head-on. In thinking about our unique situation, I couldn't help but think about our shared class discussions about how we could use Computer Science in so many disciplines, whether it be for entertainment or scientific advancement. Just now in the news you hear so many ground-breaking ways in which the application of Computer Science principles have helped during this pandemic. People have found ways to share ideas and videos while social distancing. Companies have had to enhance their transportation and logistics algorithms to meet the needs of the grocery stores to stay stocked. Doctors have had to keep up with supplies and inventory. Apps have emerged that allow for people to order take-out or buy from small businesses, even keep up with their mental health. The media has had to develop interactive maps to keep up with the count of COVID-19 cases. The department of Public Health has had to develop programs that will determine where people who have been exposed to have been and how to reach out to other potential patients. The list goes on!
During this time I would like you to reflect personally on where your interests lie in a specific Computer Science discipline and share with me your ideas on how you would be involved in helping during this pandemic. There are no right or wrong answers just use this opportunity to explore your expectations for your future career in Computer Science and what fields you would be interested in. Below is a link to a google form you can submit with your answers. Due 3/30/2020.

- Creating a Python file multiple ways. Two examples of how are:
- Right-click in the Workspace panel (letter A in the image) to open a context menu. Select New File. This approach lets you name the file as you create it.
- From the menu bar, select File > New File. The file must be named with the .py file extension. This approach prompts you to name the file when you manually save it. If you don’t save the file with the .py extension, it will not be a Python file and it won’t work properly.
